You most likely will not need wine. What is the make and model of the device? Does the device show up in nautilus?

Is MP3 player configured as a USB mass memory storage (default mode for external disk and USB key) or as a Windows Mobile Device ?
Could you plug MP3 player, run command lsusb and report result ?

When you plug in the device, wait 10 seconds then run:

dmesg | tail -n 10

What is output?

Could you try another USB port and wait 10 s before doing lsusb . Sometimes USB ports of same PC are different (connected to a different chipset or mechanical tolerance).

Your MP3 player is not seen on USB bus.
Did you use USB cable provided with MP3 player (some device works properly only with provided USB cable, I had issue with an external drive) ?
Can you see USB key or external drive on USB bus (use again lsusb command) ?

Could you run command:
    tail -f kern.log
insert the MP3 player and report new text

Sorry, tail -f /var/log/kern.log

Could you see in your BIOS if you have an option about EHCI/UHCI. Some people solved such issue by switching this option. It seems that the device is electrically detected on USB bus, but protocol messages failed to be exchanged.
