Installing Ubuntu 10.04 as guest fails with unpartitioned disk under VirtualBox

Asked by Michael Rasmussen

Installation of 10.04 fails in VirtualBox if disk is unpartitioned. The result is that no partitions are created at all which causes grub-install to fail.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Create a virtual machine in virtualbox
2) Attach ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso to CD
3) Boot virtual machine
4) Choose to install
5) Every configuration step proceeds without any errors but at the very last part of installation grub-install fails since there are no partitions on disk
6) Choose proceed without running grub-install does not work either since there are no partitions there is nothing saved to the disk.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Judging from your description, I am going to assign this bug to the “virtualbox-ose” package in hopes that it will have a faster response. If you believe that I have chosen the wrong package, please change your bug to the correct one. Good luck on getting it fixed!

Thank you for reporting this bug.

What version of virtualbox-ose are you using?

What is your host OS?

It is not virtualbox-ose but the Sun (Oracle) version.
I have seen this in 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8.

In 2.8 the situation is somewhat different in that way that the system
is not able to boot.

Ubuntu 9.10

The same applies to 10.04 and Debian Unstable

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

Michael, please don't answer with previous message, as it makes Web site unreadable.
I made a lot of virtual machines with unpartitioned disk with 32 bits Ubuntu versions.
Could you check is the 32 bits version of 10.04.1 can install itself on your computer, with an unpartitioned disk ?
So I will know if it is an issue with 64 bits version or an issue specific to your configuration.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Michael Rasmussen for more information if necessary.
