Dell Inspiron 6400 - Radeon Mobility X1400 Videos/DVDs won't play in VLC

Asked by Jake

When I attempt to open a video file both VLC and Movie Player immediatly close upon opening.
When I try to play a DVD they both just sit there and do nothing.
I don't know what video drivers or codecs I have and I don't no how to find out... (newbie) Last time I tried to fix a graphics problem I managed to ruin Ubuntu so much that eventually we just had to reinstall 8.10.

Can someone help??

Please check that you have all repositories (Main, Restricted, Universe, Multiverse) enabled in System > Administration > Software sources.

Then open a terminal and run this command:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

This will give you the codecs needed to play most of the multimedia you may own.

Next you should also setup the Medibuntu repository. Go here for instructions to enable this repository
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

then from the terminal

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 w32codecs

This will give you DVD support and additional codecs.

Hope this helps
