Vlc fails to start on Karmic how to clean vlc stored custom settings

System is comprised of a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H motherboard with AMD 785G/SB710 chipset carrying 4GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM and an AMD Athlon II X4. 512 MB is reserved for the onboard vga. Karmic is a clean install with everything on Ext4 except 'boot'. I tried to remove and reinstall several times with the same results.

I can't seem to start Vlc from the Applications menu. Once in a while I get the window frame with only the title bar and the window frame and nothing else. The window is completely blank otherwise, and it does not close by itself and I have to kill it. However, the window usually disappears as soon as it appears.

When I tried to start it from the command line typing 'vlc', I got the following:
