Dose anyone know how to get an ¨EXE¨ file to Execute

Asked by Ed Eschbank

Seems nearly every thing I used to add to my Windows won´t install on Ubuntu from an ¨EXE¨ file such as VLC player, Avast antivirus and Frooty Loops sound recording studio as a few examples.
I´d either like to know a way of exercuting these ¨EXE¨ files so they work or somewhere I can get the same Programs that run on Linix platform or equivelant programs from somewhere that will run on this platform.
Cheers Eddy :)

You will not be able to natively run any .exe programs. It is best to use linux replacement files.

A table of replacement programs is listed here
http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

Although this is a nice list, it is not completely comprehensive. For example it lists RoseGarden and Ardour as replacements for Fruity Loops, but it does not list LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio) which may be the most popular replacement.

Some programs such of VLC have been ported to all platforms. You can install from Ubuntu Software Center, Synaptic, or the command line. When installed these programs with run natively and work perfectly.

As for anti-virus programs, they are typically not required under linux.

As a last resort, some .exe programs can run under WINE which is an interpreter for the windows API. Not all programs work perfectly and some do not work very well at all. Check the Wine Application database for the particular program you are interested in

Thanks Wyatt,
For all the tips in these and my other question it seems I have a lot of things to look up, then try and remember back to the days when I did everything in basic and had to load everything into the computer.
As on the Scribus answer to what takes the place of Publisher, I did download the latest ver but when I tried to install it I had no Idea there wasn´t a setup file or install so will have to find a way of understanding Linux termanoligy as I have only ever been a Windows person from day 1 when I cut my teeth on an IBM compatableand did things in basic and C and Cobal etc in programming on the old XTś after prev having Atarie home computers in the dark ages hehehehe.
Although you seem pretty knowledgable in these matters, you may know or be able to tell me how to do installs of Linux Ubuntu compatable programs as as I said I was like a fish out of water doing something I knew nothing about. Even though I have been useing Ubuntu for the past week and a half and think over all itś pretty good and dose just about everything that most people would ever need.
I do realise that the Linux platform dosn´t really need a virus checker but always better be safe than sorry as a precausion.
Cheers Eddy :)
PS
I hope itś well on itś way to be solved :)

Oh - there is a Windows emulator called 'wine' and an extention of it calle 'playonlinux'. These will open and attempt to install a Windows executable, but there are many, many Windows programs that will not run properly. It is a thing to use only when you are desparate. And it NEVER works with Windows hardware drivers.

VLC is in the repos. Why are you trying to install a WIndows version of an app when its right there in software centre......?

If you want a frooty loops equivelant then try LMMS

Also wine is NOT an emulator, it's what wine stands for

(W)ine (I)s (N)ot an (E)mulator

Also, if you want avast (for whatever reason, ubuntu doesn't need AV unless you are running a file server with WIndows clients, or an email server) then you can use this:
http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition#tab4

Native avast AV
