How do I Install Windows programs?

Asked by Rod

I downloaded the most recent edition of Wine, but don't know how to use it, or to install proprietary programs intended for Windows OS's. Could someone walk me through the process of installing a game currently found on a disc, a keychain drive, or a floppy? Thanks.

it is very simple.

sudo apt-get install wine
wine /path/to/the/file.exe

ready. Maybe you should take a look at the command

wine-cfg

too

In order to run/install programs under WINE goto
Applications > Accessories > Wine File

In the window that pops up select the drive your setup file is in from the top of the window.
(d:/ for example to find your cd-rom drive)

Once you open the drive it should display the available files windows explorer style.

Select the setup.exe (file names vary). That should install the program.

Be aware some programs are not supported in WINE but the list is growing shorter everyday.

Hello,

The best way to install the latest version of wine is to download it from the wine repositories.
There is all the information you need on the Ubuntu wiki here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine

If you need to install a specific windows program, you can find if it is supported and howtos on the wine application database:
