Command line URL

Asked by Narcis Garcia

If I click on a link as in the web page:
http://www.mozdev.org/community/irc.html
and specify Mozilla Firefox to open this with X-Chat, this last application doesn't connect to the specified server nor the specified channel.

I believe that is much important that if someone starts X-Chat with a command line like this:
xchat-gnome irc://irc.mozilla.org/#mozillazine
...the application obeys the parameter over the program settings.

Hello

IRC follows a different standard and its defined as IRC URL standard

http://www.w3.org/Addressing/draft-mirashi-url-irc-01.txt

and the second parameter which is in that standard so the URL opens with your IRC client

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

Following that standard, the following URL should be valid?
irc://irc.mozilla.org/

I've looking for URL or parameter questions in the application help, but I haven't found how must be specified the parameters.

yes If you are connecting to a specific server.. If you are connecting to a channel in a server then channel name should be specified

irc://irc_server_name/#channel

example :

irc://irc.freenode.net/#ubuntu-helpteam

With Ubuntu GNU/LInux 8.04 (Hardy Heron) 64-bits and "xchat-gnome" package v0.18
I've tried running this line:
xchat-gnome irc://irc.freenode.net/#ubuntu-helpteam
but opens the "preferences" settings (server&channel).

Conects to the server, but doesn't open the channel.

Of course, the first time I open "xchat-gnome" I gave a nick name, and now "xchat" has taken the same data.
