Blinking black screen AFTER boot up

Asked by Michelle Walker

This is similar to other problems but not quite the same. I have NO problems booting up or getting Ubuntu 10.04 to run, but WHILE it's booting up I do get a flashing black screen with the white cursor. Again, no problems but I'm just wondering if I should correct this before I have a possible problem in the future since so many people seem to be having a similar problem. Ubuntu is fully installed (installed just fine, no hang-ups at all) and has been working great. Just wondering.

If you get a blank screen at boot after install or booting from the Ubuntu install cd please read:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-fix-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup.html

If you have trouble with intel8xxx graphic cards:

please try this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

I'm not sure any of those are relevant. I had Ubuntu installed as a trial
before (side by side with XP) and never had this problem. I don't have a
problem with the install cd; the installation is a full one. I don't run it
from the cd. I don't just get a black screen and nothing else. I get a
blinking black screen in-between boot up screens. Nothing freezes up,
nothing stops. I just get the black screens as part of the booting process.

how long is the black screen there for? if it's a few seconds, you probably have a slow video card.
if it hangs for 5 to 10 mins, then there is a problem.

U do not have a problem. After ubntu loads u will see a white cursor blink a few X in the upper left corner, then some scripts -that is normal.

the black screen as it boots is normal as long as u get ur main screen quickly after
