Start Up...

Asked by deanna

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, or so the black screen displays... I had 10.04 on PC, and just before updating, PC died on me. I tried to reboot, but PC continuously starts at the black screen, asking for User Name and Password. I know both, and insert both, but once they are in PC, I get

"Welcome to Ubuntu!
  *Documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/

0 packages can be updated.
0 updates are security updates.

_@-desktop:~$"

After a few minutes, the word 'shutdown' automatically appears and the PC shuts down.

I don't know what to put into PC at that point, so I am stuck there...

Did this start straight after installation? I think it's a problem with xserver. If I understand you right, when you boot in you get a command line?

If yes, try typing in startx
hope this helps
