What is the X window

Asked by parker lewis

Hi,

I am learning Ubuntu as I don't want to hear about windows again. Just want to know what the X window means, or what or where is it?

Also on my quest to leave windows totally, I cant really find Corel draw x4 for Linux, is there an equivalent I can get for Linux Platform that supports Corel Draw format and has the Corel power, cos I have hundred of Corel draw projects and really don't want to do all from scratch .

Please Advise.

The X window is what gives the desktop. Without it you would be using a command line environment only. You desktop environment then runs on top of that (Most likely Gnome but can be KDE, XFCE, LXDE as well as many many others). On top of that runs the Window Manager which will be Compiz if you use desktop effects or can be KWin in KUbuntu or openbox, fluxbox and many others.

Linux is VERY modular and ANY of these components can be switched for alternatives. Windows has ONE desktop which incorporates all 3 into the kernel. This is advantageous in that communication between the 3 items is flawless but it doesn't allow changability with ease.

Corel used to make CorelDraw for Linux when it tried selling its own version of Linux which flopped. they don't make anything for linux anymore. however, according to the wine database, some versions of corel runs on linux via wine.

you might want to try inkscape instead. it's a very good program and has a lot, but not all the features, of coreldraw and others that corel doesn't have.

Try looking at Inkscape (inkscape.org) , which is probably the most popular vector graphics editor, and with the assitance of an external program, can open coreldraw files. Alternately, you could export your coreldraw files to a different format, like SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics).
