black screen when im trying to upgrade from 8.04 to 10.10

I have tried a couple different upgrades all fresh installs and all but ubuntu 8.04 seem to be the only one that works .
every other install the screen goes black on the monitor and will not wake up .
vidoe card in the computer is a ati radeon xpress 1100 new to linux just switched about 4 days ago and im not liking it so weel so far seeing all the probl;ems im having

does anyone know of stable version that is fairly easy to install for a newbie ?

1: Download Ubuntu 10.10.
2: Burn a disc.
3: Install it from the disc.
