Monitor settings in Ubuntu

Asked by Anthony John

Because I had a blank screen (out of range) before Ubuntu would open onto the login screen I tried changing the screen resolution to rectify this and enable me to see the other operating system, should I need to use it. Unfortunately, it was on the wrong setting when I clicked on 'apply' so now I only get a blank screen when the computer starts.

Is there any way I can fix it.

Thanks in anticipation for your help.

At the moment the only information I have to hand is that it's a Targa desktop computer with an integrated video chip. It's about five(ish) years old.
With the side open I can see the number 72MOAC868290 and made in China on the side. I don't know if this will be of any help?

After much pulling out of hair and gnashing of teeth I tried the method using the Ubuntu CD. I reset the monitor and restarted the machine. It opened up with the black screen and I cursed my luck. Then lo and behold, Ubuntu opened up with the wrong resolution but what the heck. I now have a screen I can work with.
Actionparsnip, you're a gem.
