How to proceed in recovery mode

I have a problem with 11.04.I will get to log in but then my keyboard is dead no keys are working as if without power.I then go to recovery mode .In recovery mode i press resume normal boot.It then ask me to log in with name and password .Then it says deon@deon-g31m-es2c: $ .That is where i get stuck.What must i type to continue from there.?

Well, I assume you want to see your desktop first. Did you type startx?

You can boot to recovery mode and select netroot. Get a wired connection and get fully updated. May help

I tried startx.It says user not authorized to run the x server,aborting.
