desktop does not display fully

Asked by brianm

On login desktop has moved to the right so I am unable to see calendar or log out etc. There is an area to the right side of screen which is black representing the amount missing from right side. A grey strip extends vertically up right side of display which if cursor is run up it displays a band across the screen.
A large download of over 1 hour installed recently but display OK immediately afterwards. Have run Ubuntu since 2008 thanks to the help you guys have given me - but I am not technical. Ideas please......... brianm.

"There is an area to the right side of screen which is black representing the amount missing from right side."

Do you mean that there is an area to the *left* side of the screen which is black and takes up the same amount of space as the amount missing from the right side?

Also, does the login screen look right but the desktop looks wrong, or does the problem affect both the login screen and the desktop?

The log in screen looks correct. Every thing is in place up to password being entered. When the desktop loads with Aplication, System etc across the top the last 2 most importantly entries, Close/hibernate is off the right hand side. Loading a page sits ontop of this 'panel so the right side is missing. This can be made smaller to vview, or dragged to the left disappearing to the left as the right side cometo view. Every thing is othwerwise normal. Sorry to be so 'dumb'. regards brianm

Please open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command, by copying it from https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+question/174031 and pasting it into the Terminal, then pressing enter:

lsb_release -a; echo; uname -a; echo; ps ax | egrep 'unity|metacity|compiz|panel'

(If you copy it from your email instead, it will likely not work correctly, as a spurious linebreak may be inserted.)

Please also tell us if this problem occurs when you log in as a different user. If you only have one user account, you can create a second one for testing purposes in System > Administration > Users and Groups.

Thanks for patience. I have managed to log in as 'guest' but the screen
is still over to the right the area down the left side is black and
equal to what is missing from the right hand side. Hope that info is
useful. brianm

I now have some more info for you. I have changed the screens settings
and managed to stretch horizontal to the edge which revealed the
original 'shut down/hibernate button although this is now red rather
than white. On right clicking on this removing tick from 'lock to panel'
most of the information compacted into the middle of the screen except
for 'wireless signal & desk top search' which are now on the 'taskbar'
together with the 'red shut down' button I previous dragged out off the
right bottom corner. Unfortunately I cannot 'move the position of the
'day/date/time' by right clicking it and selecting 'move'. I can drag
the whole bar to the left or right as an entity.
I think the original positions & icons along the top from left were :-
Applications/Places/System, Internet, Email,Picasso, help, Desktop
search, Wireless connection,Date/time, Shut down - (screenshot
attached). Is it possible for this info to be moved accidentally, and
can you advise how to get things back to normal.
I have wasted so much of you time but I am truly grateful to you. It has
been a huge learning curve. Thanks Eliah. brianm

It appears Eliah has given up on me----Understandable as I have been going through a long learning curb
HOWEVER ALL IS NOW SORTED- The fault was with the pc screen settings (which was adjusted be the screens settings,, coupled to a possible changed in a recent update that altered symbols. For the uninitiated the Panel Properties- (hover mouse on blank part of top menu bar and right click on Properties)- which allow you to alter/move/ change orientation/add to panel/remove from panel by Right clicking on Panel then left clicking on chosen action. brianm
Thanks for making me THINK!

Nope, I was just taking a while to get around to replying. It sounds like you've figured out your problem and solved it, but if not, or you still need help with this, then please feel free to reopen this question.

(If you experience an unrelated problem, please feel free to start a new question.)
