screen resolution too large and impossible to increase to 1024 X 768

Asked by derek

i switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu 8.10 and everything seems to work correctly EXCEPT the screen resolution, which is stuck at 800X600. i tried changing it in these ways:

- terminal - safe mode - reset

- terminal - update, upgrade, then install displayconfig-gtk. i got this message:
"Package displayconfig-gtk is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: Package displayconfig-gtk has no installation candidate"

- installing Resolution Switcher. the app didn't even open.

- reinstalling firefox.

i don't know how to write code so this is the limit of my abilities. can you help me?

The useful utility displayconfig-gtk is disappeared into Ubuntu 8.10

As good starting point read already answered questions: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/

Hope this helps

I had the same problem when switching from 7.10 to 8.10. Everything worked fine in 7.10, all the way to 1680x1050....but once moved to 8.10 resolution only =800x600 & 600x480.

I do not do code either, and not much into command line script except for old DOS and mostly forgotten that. It was far easier for me just to switch back to 7.10 where all seems to work just fine. I really do not understand how an upgrade could lose that kind of graphics support, and is certainly disappointing and frustrating.

The graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 4400, and the resolution works even without the Nvidia Driver, but with it as well. That is, as long as 7.10 is being used. In 8.10, without the driver, the graphics allowed are 600x480, and something like 320 x 2xx do not remember how low it was, but never seen anything that low before. With enhanced Nvidia driver, then one can use 800x600, and 600x480.
