screen resolution

i can't change the screen resolution i have tried everything and it just chills at the original setting i have a nvidia gforce 7series graphics card and the system won't let me get it off that original setting please help me

or install the nvidia restricted drivers (System->Administration->Restricted Drivers Manager) and use nvidia-xconfig.

I had this problem, install nvidia restricted drivers did not resolve the problem.

I resolved add lines to Section "Monitor" in the xorg.conf to my monitor specification of HorizSync and VertRefresh

you have to be sure about the monitor specification because a bad number can damage the monitor

Yes I second that, you have to be VERY careful setting HorizSync and VertRefresh settings.
You can really fry a screen.
