blank desktop screen after login after installing ubuntu 12.10 on compaq evo n610c

After installing ubuntu 12.10 permanently from windows xp professional, and entering password login, it just shows a blank desktop screen. no icons, no upper left menu. nothiing. what to do ??? I am new to ubuntu and linux operated systems....do i need to go to an older version of ubuntu for ubuntu to work ???

looks like unity is not installed ::

could you try

sudo apt-get install unity

then try again

Hey Jeet. I had tried this earlier today but still no results yet....still getting getting a blank desktop background. it said unity is already the newest version

can you try
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

in terminal

i just reinstalled ubuntu to an earlier version....12.04 and that solved that problem.....im in no rush to upgrade it to 12.10. thanks for ur help
