ubuntu 11.10 nvidia: stuck in safe mode, bad video resolution

Asked by Pen16

I have just updated from norwhale to 11.10 ocelot and i have had problems in the past with my grub and resolution but at this point its so debilitating, it doesn't seem worth it. I need some serious help Please.

I am having the Grub boot (Blank screen) problem found here;

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1743535

I believe i have done this once already but will do so again, in a few.

But the real problem is the display resolution. After the update, once the login screen shows up, its all outta wack! the actual display of the login screen is bigger than my monitor and i can't scroll over, i can barely even log in. If a try any regular boots, like normal ubuntu, again the desktop is larger than my screen and loos my ability to click on anything. I can run it in safe mode but for some reason, i have no manual access to my files ( I click Places>Home folder and all it does is open Banshee, everytime).

This is my display perimeters

*-display

Awhile back, i came across an old graphics card and thought maybe it might be more compatible but i dont know what the card is! i installed device manager thinking it would read the card but i cant access the manager. So the c51 [geforce 6150 le] could be the new one or it could be the onboard.

I've been needing some serious help for a few months now and i keep leaving threads on the forum but nobody answers, ever!

Please Linux Gurus, your my only hope!

Ok, i guess i downloaded the driver for the new card and rebooted, it was all good news in that i was seeing the splash screen ( which is abnormal for me) but all it did was dump into command mode and no boot, so i rebooted and im assuming it reverted because it went back to normal and now im back to square one.

So since this card was able to display the splash and im assuming it would display everything better, how do i get it to work and boot properly?

I too have a 6150, and Ocelot works much better when you select the Unity-2D interface (click on the little gear on the username at login). I used the "additional drivers" to get the Nvidia 280... driver and use the 2D interface, and things work much better -- no more freezeups, window drag is full speed.
Click on the "dash" button, search for nvidia, and click on the nvidia settings button. Select your resolution.

Ok, yeah that worked as far as allowing me to access the things i need to but i still want a better resolution on a 22" led screen only running on low resolution, I cant even open all of gimps panels without it crossing over each other.

I also found out i was wrong, The onboard card is the Nvidia 6150 and the other extra card i put in there is an ati rv370 radeon 300e.

Does the Nvidia drivers work for the ati card? If not how do i install it? Or is the card older and less powerful than the onboard?
