Hi,

256 MB is barely enough to run Ubuntu and is not enough to install it in a graphical mode (you need at least 384 MB RAM for that).

For such a computer you may try penaOS (based on Ubuntu 8.04.2) or MoonOS (that uses LXDE instead of Gnome).

other low-resources GNU/Linux distributions you may look at are Xubuntu, Puppy Linux

Look for them at http://distrowatch.com/

Sorry,

You probably can't use penaOS which also uses Gnome (my mistake and confusion with an other distribution) with 256 MB RAM.

You can browse a few distros at http://linuxfreedom.com/Distros/

You dont run exe programs in Linux, exe programs are for WINDOWS, Linux is NOT windows so they will not work, some do work in wine but if you are trying to install drivers using exe files then this WILL fail. Only apps / games may run by using wine. Check the appdb for compatibility:
http://appdb.winehq.org/

Can you give the output of:

lspci | grep -i vga

nb.
DON'T POST IN CAPS, IT MAKES IT REALLY HARD TO READ AND LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING.

No there is no 16bit version. I suggest you use a lighter distro like Puppy Linux or DamnSmallLinux

Both will suit your hardware better as they are light. Puppy is especially groovy and is an 80Mb ISO which is pretty neat
