forgot password for ubuntu 9.10

Asked by Bill Moses

I have not used ubuntu in quite awhile and in the meantime I have forgotten my password. I can still log in because it was set for automatic log in. However now I am unable to update the system or download anything that is needed for a smooth operation of the Ubuntu.

HHold shift at boot, select recovery mode then select root. You can now run:

cd /home; ls

You can now see your username

You can now run:

passwd foo

and set your password (replace foo with your username). You can now log in as foo after a reboot

Can you help with this problem?
