sync out of range

Hello there,
I had an old desktop PC (1999) and wanted to see if it would have worked with ubuntu. I tried to install the 12.04 release (which I had on live CD) (32 bit for i386) but right after the "ubuntu loading screen (with the orange dots and stuff)" my display went off and then a writing appeared: Sync out of range.
I thought the problem might have been in the CD, so I took another ubuntu live CD which I had used previously on another machine (Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop 32 bit); it booted smoothly, installed successfully, but then, once I upgraded to 12.04 I faced the same "sync. out of range" problem.
Useless to say, now I am using 10.04 L.T.S. Lucid Lynx (and it works VERY well (I have a 850 MHz cpu with 1GB ram)); but I wanted to have this desktop with an up-to-date OS (also for safety reasons). Can somebody help? I saw there might be something to edit regarding the grub file, but I cannot load the 12.04 OS in any way (and I see the "choose your os" perfectly, the problem is after that). "Sync out of range" means that the computer's video card sends the information to the monitor in a frequency and/or resolution that the monitor cannot handle.

What video card does your computer have?
What monitor are you using?

There are several brands, and:

the motherboard is a Microstar model MS 6330;
the videocard is an Ati Rage 128 pro 32 MB;
the screen I'm using is a Samsung SyncMaster 750s (Cathode Tube).

Try the boot option:

radeon.nomodeset=1
