running 8.10 and want to update to 14.4. I have the CD

You will need to upgrade to 10.04 then to 12.04 then to 14.04

This will take a lot of data and a lot of time. Having the CD of 14.04 is only useful to you for the last step....

You will get to 14.04 faster and with a more stable OS if you run a final full backup and wipe Ubuntu 8.04 off and do a clean install of Trusty. You can then restore your user data from your backups.
