Unable to connect to the Internet

Asked by labinnsw

On my hard disk I have my default installation and in a separate partition a clean installation of Gutsy Gibbon which I can overwrite at will. I recently upgraded my motherboard (P5K SE with Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter installed) On the clean installation all is well. But that is not my default installation. On my default installation everything seems to be in order untill I try to connect to the internet. Even though the Ethernet Adapter appears to be working, Firefox always returns the error "Firefox can't find the server at URL" (where URL is whatever URL I try to access)

The forums I have fount in Linux, Debian and Ubuntu deal with situations where either the appropriate drivers have not been installed or the user does not know how to set up the internet connection. In my case the Adapter is installed and connection is set up. For some strange reason I am still not able to connect to the internet. If this can be solved I would like to attempt it. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hello

Do your broadband connection have a dynamic or static address?

look under System|Administration|Network to see if there is an 'eth0(wired)' connection, and that it is activated. You can configure IP addresses and DNS addresses there..

get back with the outcome and keep us informed so that we can help you better..

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

Thanks for replying so quickly Bhavani Shankar

In the network manager, I have selected "Enable roaming mode" which works on the old Ethernet card that I would like to remove ASAP.

The network manager lists 2 wired connections, eth1 (Attansic Ethernet Gigabit Adapter) and eth0 (Realtek Ethernet card)

As far as I can see, this is configured exactly as it is configured on the clean installation but, while it works on the clean installation, it does not work on the default installation.

I did the ping test and that seems to indicate that all is well, but I still cannot connected to the internet.

Please provide us a bit info on what do you mean by a clean and a default install...

A clean install is a new install with no work done on it at all. It is installed to be used for testing to see what works and what does not. It can be experimented on before applying the experiment to the default because if anything goes wrong it can be overwritten without fear of losing valuable data.

A default install is the one that has all the work and information. All my life's work, bookmarks, applications, notes, contacts and communications. Typically it is what we want to back up so that we can restore it if anything goes wrong.

What about to simply restart the networking layer...
Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

If you can browse this page http://82.105.36.210/ but you get error by visit: http://www.elart.it/
you have simply a dns wrong setup...

Then please set Opendns nameservers, they are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Open your System->Administration->Network menu and set them here
Then retry to browse the web...

Hope this helps

Thanks for your efforts marcobra. I was unable to browse the page http://82.105.36.210/ but the situation is not totally hopeless. Since the Ethernet adapter worked on a fresh install and since I also was having problems installing an High Point Rocket Raid 454 PCI card, (which also works perfectly on the fresh install) I figured it would be probably be easier if I could find an easy way to migrate my treasured information to the fresh install.

When I tried it I was surprised at how easy it was. It was done with no loss of data, bookmarks, contacts or emails. I did not even lose my tasks list from gtodo. Since it is a fresh install, not a restoration, I had to reinstall such things as my printer, firestarter, and a few other applications. But it was an unbelievably painless experience. I am sure I will be less hesitant to through if need be in the future.

For those people who are sometimes critical of Ubuntu, Mandriva could only recognize the drive is was installed on. Suse would not install and instead kept asking for a CD (obviously some other CD than the installation CD), Knoppix could not find any Knoppix files. Ubuntu just installed and worked.

Ubuntu, don't know how I ever lived without it.

Did you want to keep your settings and stuff? If not you can simply reboot the computer with the CD in the drive.

If you do want to keep your important stuff:
Provided your files and important data are in your Home directory, you can back them up with

In a terminal (Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal) type:
sudo su
cd /media/disk (or location where back-up will be stored.)
tar cvpzf home.tgz /home/username

To restore it after reinstallation, type:
cd /
tar xvpzf /media/disk/backup20090522.tgz -C /home/username

Correction:

tar xvpzf /media/disk/backup20090522.tgz -C /home/username
should be
tar xvpzf /media/disk/home.tgz -C /home/username

If any of this poses a problem, just copy your home directory to a safe place, reinstall ubuntu then overwrite your new home directory with the one you saved.

I forgot to add:
Type the following in a terminal when you are finished if you used the last method.

chmod 644 .dmrc
chmod 700 ~

While reinstalling you will get some options to format your disk. Choose the manual option. You will be shown all partitions on the selected drive and their size. It won't be hard to identify what system is on which partition.

The drive you are looking for should be an ext3 partition with mount point / and of the size you had allocated to the system you want to overwrite. You can choose to leave all other partitions unformatted including the swap partition.

The partition menu will look something like the attached

In the example shown, my first Linux partition is the 3rd partition on
the drive. Windows is on the 1st and swap is the 2nd.

Up to manual formating opotion I did everything as per your guidance.
Even what image you sent is also available.
Then I selected my sda8 and ext 3 and mount point /
then I clicked forward.
It showed me a window with a warning that all my data will be removed for
selected partiting.
I do not want this. I want my windowxp as it is .
Will my other partitions be removed? Will my other data lost or just sda8
ext3 and swap will be over written?
( I selected Format check box after selecting my drive in which ubuntu is
installed and edited it while selecting / and ext 3 )
Am I doing everything right?

ee, When I boot from CD Ubuntu 8.10, I can connect to internet instantly. Even it does not ask my details of services provider. It even do not ask me usename and password of broadband service provider.

My connection icon on right top bar, when I right click it it shown "connection information" and "edit connection"
In connection information it shows Auto eth0 as default and shows its information.
If I click edit connection , i get a window in which "Wired" tab I select "autoeh0" and click edit to see details. It shows MAC address as 00:24:8c:0C:29:8C. ALL OTHE TABS HAVE NOTING IN IT.
When I left click connection icon on right top bar, I can see a radio button (selected) with Auto eth0 .

Now when (from cd booting mode itself) I go to System - administration - networking tool - I get device networking tool.
There are two 1) Loop back and 2) Ethernet Interface eth0 .
In ethernet interface, there are two protocol Ipv4 and ipv6

Now when restart my system and remove cd and book from my hard disk ubuntu 8.10 and right click connection icon on right top bar, I do not see connection information. Also it has only lo and no mac address.

When I click system - administration - networking tool - device ntetworking tool there is loop back with all details and in ethernet interface I DO NOT FIND IPV4 AND ITS DETAILS.

I think this is the problem due to I can not connect while booting from my hard disk.
My computer was with Window xp with 4 partitions. I installed ubuntu 8.10 on saparate partition. This time I was not having zte modem and broadband connection.
After a week I purchased ZTE modem and broadband connection and started it in windows. But when i booted my machine from bunutu, i found it is not connection to internet.
I tried to boot Ubuntu from CD and I found that without any setting every time I can connect to internet.
I do not have hart to reinstall Ubuntu as I am scared I may mess up with everything.

CAN ANYONE SHOW ME WHERE I AM DOING MISTAKE IN SETTING?
From where can I set my interent connection?
Hasit
