how to test the hard drive

I just installed a 250 gig hard drive and UBUNTU 8 and I want to test the drive and its capacity. How do I do this?

I'm a newbe.

What do you mean by "test"?

You have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on this drive or is it an additional drive?
Is it a USB connected external drive or have you added it internally?

Are you just trying to see the drive from within Ubuntu so you can use it?
