You could install Windows on a virtual machine and then install iTunes without wine.

No, but there are much better free and open source alternatives that are compatible with devices like iPods. One such example is Rhythmbox, which comes preinstalled by default on all Ubuntu installations.

Rhythmbox is nice but it does not work with iphone, only recognizes it as a camera.

how can I install a virtual machine? would I just install windows in the virtual machine? would it run slower cause 2 os's would be running?

Yes, it is slower... You would need to install a program like VitrualBox to allow you to install Windows inside of Ubuntu. Are you wanting to just sync music, or sync your entire phone?

sync entire phone. not really worried about speed of itunes. just had a thought of having ubuntu as my only OS partition and running windows from a virtual machine. so virtual box is in the software center?

Try Songbird. It Looks similar to Itunes.

You can install Virtualbox typing this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose
