Switching between different windows of launched application in Unity

Asked by Ilya Smirnov

Hello!

Now in Unity (in Ubuntu 12.04) it is necessary to click in left sidebar on an icon of application and then to click on one of miniatures of windows to activate it. It is not very usable when it is needed to switch between windows of application quite often.

I think I know how to improve usability. I think it would be better to make so that it would be possible to switch between windows by putting the mouse pointer over an icon of launched application without clicking and then to activate window by putting the mouse pointer over selected miniature also without clicking.

Also I think it would be better to make so that it would be possible to minimize active window by clicking on an icon of application like in traditional desktop environments.

Thanks a lot!

The unity design mailing list would be the most appropriate place to talk about your idea. In the Unity design mailing list you will be able to start a discussion directly with other Unity developers and perhaps even Mark Shuttleworth.

To subscribe to the Unity design mailing list, please follow the steps below,

1. Become a member of Ayatana discussion group. You can find them at https://launchpad.net/~unity-design
2. Once you are approved, subscribe to the mailing list on the same page
3. You can then email the mailing list with your idea.

To answer your second question regarding minimizing windows by clicking on their icon, I have attached a bug report where you can read more about why this behavior has not been approved. However, there are community made solutions which you can use to achieve this behavior. You can find them at http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/03/how-to-minimize-apps-to-the-unity-launcher-in-ubuntu-12-04

I hope this helps you bring forth your idea to everyone in the community. Please mark this question if you are satisfied with this answer.
