Bootloader fails to load load ubuntu (wubi)

Asked by buurd

Last night I ran the updates and then shutdown the computer. Now in the morning Ubuntu doesn't start. There are an errormessage written when I choose Ubuntu but the command to restart the computer is issued so fast that I barly can see that something gets written. I'm guessing that something is wrong with grub since I don't get to choose what kernelversion I'd like to start with.

So I'm thinking about copy the "disks" folder, reinstall Wubi and then replace the new "disks" with the old ones. But before I start with this I'd like for someone to actually say that it is a good idea or if there are a simpler method to

Since I don't have permission to repartion the disk Wubi is my only choice to run Ubuntu on the computer (from work).

Thanks in advance
Roland

If you are running Ubuntu 10.04, then there is a grub update released recently that is preventing Wubi installs from booting.

In this case, backing up root.disk and copying after reinstalling will not work since the problem is within the root.disk.

Have a read of this http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10183394&postcount=87 - this discusses the general problem and solution.

Basically, you have to boot a live CD, loop mount your root.disk and manually edit the grub.cfg file to get Wubi to boot again. Then once booting, you can fix the problem by cleaning up files within /boot/grub that are causing problems on wubi installs when grub.cfg is generated.

PS if you want to back up data on the root.disk from Windows you can use ext2read
(http://ext2read.blogspot.com/) - just point it at
c:\ubuntu\disks\root.disk.

Can you help with this problem?
