Asked by mika k

Hi my comp specs are below dxdiag. My computer keeps giving me errors when trying to install Ubuntu, ive used the win installer and a disk for both 32 bit and 64 bit, the error shows line after line of (<ffffffff(then random # and letters>) then something like Kernel_string_(theres alot of it)
This fills up the screen which is enirely black and white with text.

Did you md5 test the iso you downloaded?
Did you check the cd for defects once booted to?

@actionparsnip: could you link question about Ubuntu installed inside Windows to wubi project. This project is currently subscribed by a very active and competent person. So he will be able to answer the question and you will have more time for other questions.

mika k, if I understand you correctly, you have installed Ubuntu using a CD you burned.

You first installed with Wubi, and then when you rebooted (the part that completes the install) you were presented with many strange lines of error messages - and your computer froze.
You then tried installing by booting from the CD and the same thing occurred.
Is this correct?

It helps to provide as much information as possible in order to determine what the issue is. I don't believe there are issues with your ATI card. But I've seen problems with the Toshibas. In fact, just checking now it seems you'll need to supply "acpi=off" with this computer as a boot option. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1512948

If you want to know exactly how to modify your boot options (whether booting from a live CD or wubi etc.) then see this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

Yeah with both a 64 bit disk and a 32 bit disk, it freezes, i installed it with acip workaround or something and it installed fine, but when i tried to boot it, im dual booting by the way, it just gave me the errors.

You need to make that acpi=off workaround permanent. It's not just needed to install.

So when you boot, hit 'e' on the first entry, and add it again, then CTRL+X to boot. Then once booted, go to /etc/default/grub and make it permanent (the first link I provided shows exactly how to do this).

Until you do this, you'll have to manually supply the workaround each time you boot.

PS someone in that thread mentioned that updating your BIOS resolves the problem. You can keep the workaround in place until you get the BIOS updated, and then try it (first manually by 'e'diting the boot entry). Once it's working, you can go back to /etc/default/grub and remove the workaround.

go to http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp (click on download, and enter your laptop details).

Or tell me your full model number... C650D-????

It looks like there is a version 1.60 out there released in October this year.

You could phone Toshiba - they must have a way of figuring out what type of computer it is ;)

Look on the box. Look in the manual.

I looked at 3 of the available models and they all have the same BIOS update anyway... but I wouldn't mess with that without being sure.

Where did you buy the computer? Go ask them.

Go to http://support.toshiba.ca/support/Download/ln_byModel.asp

Click on Notebook, Satellite, C650D, PSC16C-0040M, click GO.

You'll see a popup with a bios update for version 1.60

There are some instructions for downloading and installing it safely.
