i cannot auto-boot ubuntu because of wubi-10.10-rev197.log

Asked by Steve Lewis

Hi, i have a Compaq 610 notebook laptop with Windows 7.

I've downloaded Ubuntu(desktop and laptop Version), burned it to a disk, and I ran the disc, It opened an application, and it says to reboot my computer and it has 3 options. i chose to "Reboot now". i did that and it never ran from the disk. so then I chose the "Help me boot from CD" option out of the 3 options. and while it is setting up the boot program it says (Almost at the end of the install process)...

"An error occurred:
Could not retrieve the required installation files
For more information, please see the log file:
C:\Users\*********\AppData\Local\Temp\wubi-10.10-rev197.log"

then it closes out the application and nothing is changed(or atleast what i think.)

Please help. This is the first time I've done this.

If you want to boot from CD you need to tell the BIOS to do this. Usually you can enter BIOS and change the boot order, or you can press a 'boot options key' (e.g. on my computer F12 let's me choose what to boot from) but consult your computer's user manual.

What you are trying to do is to get an entry in the Windows boot manager, that will boot the CD. This is another method if you can't figure out how to boot he CD.
Unfortunately you are encountering an issue - and the log file that you mentioned will explain why. (It's in the %temp% directory, so you can pastebin it if you like and I'll take a look).

Generally when you burn an Ubuntu CD you want to burn it at the slowest speed possible using the recommended methods described here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
And don't use a RW CD - I've had problems with these.

I did burn it onto a CD-R not CD-RW also at 10X (the slowest speed I could get).
But i will try the BIOS and i will get back to you.(or who ever)
Pastebin?? lol
Also, would u like to see the file?

yeah try the BIOS then you don't have to worry about the log file.

But if you still have issues copy the file to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ (please don't post it here) - and pass back the address here.

PS if you do get the CD to boot, you can run a check on it. When you see the keyboard icon (bottom centre) hit the space bar (this will give you the extended menu after selecting your language). Then one of the options there is to check the CD. It's a good idea to do this before installing.

If you are planning to install Ubuntu alongside windows, then be careful with the new 10.10 installer. It's got a confusing interface, and if you select Use whole drive or Use whole partition (even after initially telling it to split the Windows partition) it overwrites windows.

Alright, so i did make it run the disc drive first, but when i started it up it said that files have been changed or removed and there was two choices

Run computer repair(recommended)[didn't work]
Start windows normally

but it did not install Ubuntu from reboot.

02-09 14:49 DEBUG Distro: checking Ubuntu ISO C:\ubuntu\install\installation.iso
02-09 14:49 DEBUG Distro: wrong size: 28602368 < 600000000

The CD you have is invalid - it's shown as 28MB whereas it should be around 699MB. Download the ISO again and burn another CD. Make sure it's the right size before burning.

PS you're supposed to return the pastebin address back - otherwise I have to go looking for it. i.e. http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/565181/

You should not extract it.
For more info go to http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download , Step 2, click Show me how.

Glad you got it sorted. I wasn't thinking that... things always seem easier
when you know how to do them. As you said... now you know. You'll learn a
lot with Ubuntu. Make sure you have good backups and it will be relatively
painless.
