Trouble installing with CD

Asked by Ryan Domingue

While installer is extracting from the CD, I get an error:

An error occured:
Permission denied
For more information, please see the log file: c:\docume~1\ryando~1\locals~1\temp\wubi-10.10-rev197.log

However, I can not find any such file in the specified location, and a search cannot find any file with that name anywhere in the drive. This has happened with both the CD, and while using the installer (which the CD uses anyway...)

I also have found that I cannot boot from the CD either, I get an error extracting diskfiles (or something to that effect) and the computer reboots.

There is likely a problem with the CD - bad burn or a bad image used to burn.

Regarding that log file - it's in a directory that is usually hidden, but you can get to it by entering %temp% in the explorer address bar. Or opening the file in notepad: %temp%\wubi-10.10-rev197.log (the long name will also likely work using this method).

But I suspect it will show Errno13 or possibly a size exception or an md5sum failure.

So... you can remove the CD and run wubi.exe standalone - this will download a new desktop ISO image. Or if you still have the ISO on your local computer, place it in the same directory as wubi.exe and wubi will use it (as long as you don't have the corrupt CD in the drive).

It's a good idea to have a good Ubuntu CD anyway - so I recommend reburning the ISO at the slowest possible speed - follow instructions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

If you use Wubi, please refer to the Wubi Guide: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

When I downloaded the standalone installer, I ran it and it gave me an error saying there was no disk in Drive D: (CD Drive). I tried it with the ubuntu disk in the drive, just to see if it would work, but i got the same error as I did before. interestingly, with the CD in the drive, I still got the CD error twice, but after hitting Cancel both times, it went to the install menu...

I will attempt to redownload the ISO, but this will have been the third time I've done it, so I'm not sure if I got a bad ISO the first two times in a row...

The 'no disk' error is actually to do with a drive letter assigned to an
empty drive - not a CD drive - something like a USB device e.g. card reader,
phone. If you can unplug unecessary peripherals it shouldn't complain. If
you have the ISO on your hard drive, then just use it again as I described
in the same folder as wubi.exe (and make sure the bad CD is not in the
drive).

Ryan Domingue is still having a problem:

I mounted the ISO with DAEMON Tools and it worked just fine. I thought I had tried that before but...I guess I hadn't. Oh well, something must've gone screwy when I burned the disk, I'll try again at a lower write speed. Thanks.

Thanks bcbc, that solved my question.
