Could someone look at this log file? Cannot download desktop via Windows Installer

Had Ubuntu many months on dual boot with Windows.
Yesterday failed to authenticate login.
So attempted reinstall 10 times, using Windows installer and it failed each time. The installation screen just disappears..

Did you just use wubi.exe in windows or did you also download the ISO file?

I just used the wubi.exe which I downloaded, then it ran an uninstall as previous installation detected.
I did try downloading an ISO file separately but couldn't find the app file to install it. Used winzip to extract but still couldn't find how to activate the damn thing. Sorry for being so thick.

Youo don't extract the iSO. I'm tired of windows users doing this. The icon MAY appear as an archive but RESIST the urge to automatically extract it.The pretty picture your oS gives the file means nothing whatsoever. If you download and MD5 test the ISO you can then mount it with magicdisk or daemontools, then run wubi from that (much easier). This should help

You're using the 10.04.1 version of wubi.exe. This doesn't work anymore.

You can't get the right version of wubi.exe for lucid any place other than from within the 10.04.2 desktop CD ISO, or here http://people.canonical.com/~evand/wubi/lucid/wubi-r191.exe

If you're running wubi.exe with a 10.04.1 desktop CD ISO in the same folder it will work provided you supply the --skipmd5check option. If you install from the 10.04.1 CD it will work if you are not connected to the internet.
But I don't recommend installing 10.04.1 anymore as the next thing you will do is run the updates to take you to 10.04.2 and then the included grub update will break wubi.

Hi bcbc,
I did in fact follow Actionparnsip's instructions and it worked. I downloaded the 10.04.1 (I chose this for LTS although this is pretty redundant having lost last installation including all configuration, documents and bookmarks etc) from Ubuntu's website and mounted it on a virtual drive created using magicdisc.
I used wubi.exe included in the ISO.
It worked, and I'm typing this from within Ubuntu where I have, as you warned, just downloaded 82 software updates and am being asked to reboot.
I am not familiar with the programming language of Ubuntu, so any advice you can give before I reboot gratefully received.

Are you sure you downloaded the 10.04.1 (it's not available for download anymore)? You probably downloaded 10.04.2.

This is what you should do to check whether it will reboot:
1. go to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+t)

2. enter (the following command uses lower case LS):
ls /boot/grub

3. if you see many files of type .mod etc. you will have a problem. You should only see 2 (or maybe 3) files: grubenv, grub.cfg (and maybe something like locale.pf2)

If it looks ok - then you most likely downloaded 10.04.2 and you will be fine. If not, you need to apply the permanent fix from the wubi megathread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1639198

That's good to hear. You're welcome!

It's unfortunate that you lost data the first time - this has been a problem plaguing wubi for a while, but we've been trying to patch stuff (mainly from that wubi megathread I linked to above). If you have any more wubi issues try there first, because it's usually possible to repair, and your data could most likely have been recovered.

The good news is that there is finally a bug fix that is being queued up. But the best bet is just to avoid grub- package updates unless you are sure it references the wubi problems.

You can mount the ISO and run wubi from there.

Oneiric wubi r225 is broken and out of date. There's a 236 already.

But it looks like the image it downloaded has a problem as well. Please report these as bugs or at least create a brand new question. Also post the wubi log to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ to make it more readable.
