Lucid Lynx v. Longhorn

Asked by shinda

Hello,

After less than a year of using a personal computing notebook that dual booted Lucid Lynx and Longhorn, the Lucid install no longer boots, and leaves the machine to shut down and restart without prompting for user interaction.

I used Wubi to install Lucid Lynx as it was provided by Ubuntu on the Ubuntu website.

How might users best correct this problem, especially if Ubuntu no longer boots?

Shinda

Please review the Wubi megathread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1639198
For 10.04 booting problems, see Problem #2, Solution #1. After fixing you must also apply the Permanent Fix described in the same post.

This fix requires a current Ubuntu CD that you can boot in live CD mode (Try without installing). If you have any questions feel free to ask either here or on that the abovementioned support thread.

After reviewing *RESULTS.txt, I'm confused.

The Boot Info Summary, is dated February 15, 2010 and indicates "Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda."

Furthermore, *RESULTS.txt presents the following information:

sda1:
  File system: ntfs
  Boot sector type: Windows Vista/7
Boot sector info: No errors found in the Boot Parameter Block.
  operating System:
  Boot files/dirs:

What isn't Windows listed for the operating system parameter of sda1?

The date refers to the version of bootinfoscript, not when you ran it.
Windows is installed in the MBR refers to the presence of the Windows bootloader in the drive Master boot record. This is normal for computers running Windows (and those running Windows and Ubuntu through Wubi).

If you are unsure please post the entire bootinfoscript result to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com and post the pastebin address back here.
