Ubuntu will not boot

Asked by John depere

Hello, I am new to Ubuntu and a novice computer user. I have installed Wubi and used the installation guide to install Ubuntu on my computer alongside Windows. The install finished completely but when I restarted the computer I did not get the option to start the op sys into Ubuntut and it just started Windows as normal. I have read in one of the help guides to see if the install files had gotten renamed to found ooo.(they did not) and to check for the boot files and they all seem to be there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John. Also to note; I am trying to install the latest version 11.04 via the cd I burned off Ubuntu site.

The problem is usually:
1. The Timeout for the boot manager did not get modified (or was previously set to ZERO)
2. The entry for Ubuntu in the boot manager did not get setup.

1. is easiest to fix.
Right-click on My computer (or Computer if Vista/7), click Properties, Advanced, Startup & Recovery settings. Then check and change the Timeout to 15 or 30.

2. In the same place there is a drop down box that should be set to Windows (default OS to boot) - but make sure there is also an Ubuntu entry in there. Do NOT set Ubuntu as default. If you choose to do this, you have to make sure the timeout is 10 or higher. Setting it to 0 and 1 with Ubuntu as the default is known to prevent Windows from booting.

If you checked 2 and there is no Ubuntu entry, post back with your Windows type (XP, Vista/7). If XP, paste the contents of C:\boot.ini (hidden file).
