By "Windows mode" do you mean the wubi.exe installer? The installer should have prompted you to setup your username/password. If you are booting into a livecd the user/pass is "ubuntu" with a blank password(press enter).

When you install with Wubi you have to enter your desired password twice. But it's a little confusing because the logon name displayed is your Windows user name, not the ubuntu user name you chose. So, just ignore that and enter the password you chose.

e.g. windows user name John, wubi will pick an ubuntu user name of "john". Login prompt for Ubuntu is "John". If you choose an ubuntu user name of "something" it will still prompt you at login for "John". So just ignore that and put in your ubuntu password.

If that fails you can change the Ubuntu password. Boot the "recovery mode" option. Drop to a root shell. Change your password... if your ubuntu username is "john" then to reset enter: passwd john
Then reboot and login normally.
