Can't get rid of Ubuntu entry in Windows boot manager

Asked by Taylan Müslüman

I installed Ubuntu into Windows with WUBI installer, then I wanted to uninstall it, so I used Windows' " add or remove programs" tool, like I'm uninstalling any other app. But I still have the Windows boot manager screen whenever I open the computer. There are both Windows and Ubuntu options, but Ubuntu doesn't work ofc. Couldn't find a way to get rid of it...

You don't say which version of Windows.

Have you tried the command: fixmbr

Have a look at e.g. http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/

Otherwise Google: Windows [name of version] fix mbr

I'm using Windows Vista, and unfortunately I don't have it's setup disk.

you can download the recovery disk, that's what it's called, from the micrhoshaft support website.
be prepared to wade through lots of links before you find it.

I don't know about Vista, but you used to be able to fixmbr with many things including FreeDOS which, as the name suggests, is freely downloadable.

It's not the grub bootloader, it's the windows boot manager. You can remove options using Windows' command line tool: bcdedit
There is also a free tool called easyBCD that has a gui interface if you find the tool difficult.

BCDEDIT
First you need an administrative command prompt: click Windows key, type CMD, and right click CMD.EXE and select Run as Administrator.
Enter:
bcdedit

This lists your current bcd store - take note of the guid for Ubuntu e.g. {802d5e32-0784-11da-bd33-000476eba25f}

Then remove it:
bcdedit /delete {802d5e32-0784-11da-bd33-000476eba25f}
