Cannot find /dev/video0

Asked by Bruce Crowther

System is Intrepid 64, until recent updates have been using webcam in xawtv, skype, and cheese.

Now, lsusb shows camera present, lsmod shows driver modules (gspca) loaded, group "video" NOT in users and groups, and this is what happens when I tried using sudo, in case it was simply (yet another) Ubuntu permissions peculiarity:

us@us-desktop:~$ sudo xawtv
"This is xawtv-3.95.dfsg.1, running on Linux/x86_64 (2.6.27-14-generic)
xinerama 0: 1280x1024+0+0
WARNING: No DGA direct video mode for this display.
can't open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
no video grabber device available"

I also noted that at the same time the webcam stopped working, logging out, either by using FUSA or Control+Alt+backspace caused the blackscreen of death (formerly working alright). I have no idea if both these problems are related to the same update, but both started at the same time.

Any pointers to a fix, please?

Not sure why, or what: for the hundredth time I unplugged and replugged the lead for the camera, checking "dmesg" each time.
Finally the camera was recognised, and is working. And it appears to have "stuck" because it has survived a reboot. For now, it is solved.
